It’s being called a first-in-the-nation ban on trans athletes competing in women’s sports countywide on Long Island. LGBTQ advocates called it illegal, while supporters said it’s a matter of fairness and safety to women and girls. NBC New York’s Greg Cergol reports.

In a move that a local official said was done to battle so-called “bullying” from people born biologically male, a Long Island county is banning transgender athletes from competing in women’s and girls’ sports at their facilities.

Proposed changes to a school district’s policy on transgender students sparked outrage in New Jersey, as advocates and even teachers said the changes could’ve violated state law and endangered already marginalized students. NBC New York’s Ida Siegal reports.

Transgender people often have to vote with IDs that don’t represent who they are or not vote at all while they navigate the complicated process to update their IDs.
